Early Life and Background

Inetimi Alfred Odon, known worldwide as Timaya, was born on 15 August 1980 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He hails from Odi, Bayelsa State, and grew up in a large family as the youngest of fifteen children.

Timaya’s musical journey began early, as he was influenced by the sounds of Reggae, Dancehall, and traditional Bayelsa music. After completing his basic education, he moved to Lagos where he joined Eedris Abdulkareem’s hip-hop group as a backup vocalist before pursuing a solo career.

His nickname “Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa” (meaning the town crier of Bayelsa) reflects his pride in his Niger Delta roots and his role in voicing the struggles of his people.

Musical Career

Timaya’s breakthrough came in 2005 with the release of his debut single “Dem Mama”, a socially conscious song narrating the destruction of his hometown Odi by the Nigerian military. The song made him a voice for the Niger Delta struggle.

In 2007, he released his debut album True Story, which introduced him as a major force in Nigeria’s music scene. This was followed by Gift and Grace (2008) and De Rebirth (2010), the latter containing the nationwide hit “Plantain Boy”.

Over the years, Timaya successfully transitioned from a politically conscious dancehall artist to a global Afropop star, known for his infectious beats and street anthems.
