Early Life and Background

Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko, professionally known as Adekunle Gold (AG Baby), was born on 28 January 1987 in Lagos, Nigeria.

He comes from the royal Kosoko family of Lagos State, with artistic roots that influenced his career. Adekunle developed an interest in music early on, joining his church choir at the age of 15, where he learned to sing and play the guitar.

He studied Arts and Industrial Design at Lagos State Polytechnic and worked as a graphic designer before pursuing music full-time. In fact, he designed graphics for YBNL artists before signing to the label himself.

Musical Career

Early Breakthrough

Adekunle Gold first gained attention in 2014 with his creative highlife-style cover of One Direction’s Story of My Life, which he titled “Sade”. The song went viral and earned him a recording deal with YBNL Nation, owned by Olamide.

In 2015, he released “Orente”, his official debut single under YBNL, followed by “Pick Up”, both of which established him as the face of Nigeria’s urban highlife sound.

Rise to Fame

His debut album, Gold (2016), peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard World Albums chart. With singles like Sade, Pick Up, and No Forget (feat. Simi), Adekunle Gold gained recognition for blending Yoruba storytelling with contemporary Afropop.

After leaving YBNL in 2016, he founded his band The 79th Element (named after gold’s atomic number) and evolved his sound from pure highlife into Afropop, Afro-fusion, and contemporary pop.

Global Stardom

Adekunle Gold reinvented himself in the 2020s as “AG Baby”, experimenting with bolder sounds, visuals, and fashion. His albums Afropop Vol. 1 (2020) and Catch Me If You Can (2022) earned him global tours and collaborations with artists like Ty Dolla $ign and Lucky Daye.

In 2023, he signed with Def Jam Recordings and released Tequila Ever After, featuring international collabs such as Pharrell Williams and Khalid, marking his official entry into the global Afrobeats market.

Style and Influence

Adekunle Gold is admired for his:

  • Fusion of highlife, Afropop, Afro-fusion, and R&B,
  • Romantic and inspirational lyrics,
  • Visual artistry and fashion-forward style,
  • Ability to reinvent himself while staying authentic.

He has become a cultural icon for blending African heritage with global pop trends.
